They were a group full of potential; young adults previously known as the masterminds of ethnic-related conflicts and brawls on their campus of Nusa Cendana University.
They have changed. Now they are the agents of peace not only among students of the campus but for all young people in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The students, who represent a range of ethnicities and religions, formed a cell to hold a peace campaign under the name of Flobamora Peace Generation. Flobamora is a contraction of the names of all of the major ethnic groups in East Nusa Tenggara: Flores, Sumba, Sabu, Timor, Rote and Alor.
Formed following a peace declaration on March 13 last year, the pluralistic community reached out to school students and other universities in the province.
The peace movement was initiated by the Students Body of Agriculture Faculty of Nusa Cendana University and the Yogyakarta-based American Friends Service CommitteeIndonesia.
Initially consisting of eight students now co-founders and senior members: Gracelya Maniez, Jehamin Junior, Miraj Nurdin, Erna Suek, Mory Bernard Peni, Nanda Dheril Sibu, Yanuar Arifin and Athena Watrimny; the group now has 500 active members.
Each member is expected to act as an agent of peace, bringing solutions for a resolution and problem solving to any conflict.
Despite its young age, the group has accomplished many of their programs, including building a community that values uniqueness, activeness and creativity.
God created us differently so we can complement each other. Thats why we have to value our differences, said Gracelya Maniez.
Under the motto Peace is Our Lifestyle, Flobamora Peace Generation is cooperating with the Independent Journalists Alliance in Kupang as well as the American Friends Service CommitteeIndonesia to train 55 inmates at the Kupang Youth Penitentiary to become agents of peace after serving time.
In the program, the teenagers are encouraged to write down their daily experiences in jail and publish them with the media, or to get involved in music and theater.
